There’s a big difference between migrating assets and migrating trust. Most financial professionals miss this. Especially during transitions like acquisitions, mergers, or successions.
Migrating AUM might seem complex on the surface—but in reality, it’s a process.
With the right systems, a strong operations team, and a well-structured plan, it’s often done in 30 to 60 days.
Letters and Forms. Transfers. Backend coordination. Done.
But relationships? That’s a different story altogether.
Relationships don’t follow a checklist.
They don’t move just because a form has been signed.
They don’t transfer with a folio number.
They move when trust moves.
When comfort is rebuilt.
When a new connection is established.
And this takes time.
Patience. Presence. Real conversations.
Naive buyers often underestimate this part.
They think once the AUM is in, the job is done.
They assume clients will stay because the service continues.
But clients don’t stay for service. They stay for who is serving them.
They stay for the one who knows their fears. Their story. Their kids’ names.
On the other hand, many sellers also miss this.
They don’t account for the time and effort it takes to truly transition a relationship.
They think it’s a handover. It’s not. It’s a slow and thoughtful introduction.
If you want long-term retention, you have to go beyond the numbers.
Because clients are not assets. They’re people.
And relationships, unlike AUM, don’t migrate in 30 days.
They take as long as trust takes.
And that’s what you should plan for.
