I saw this amazing tweet the other day. It was so powerful that I first decided to leave it as is and not add my commentary. Then I gave in.
On the left, someone is selling flowers.
“Flowers. $10.”
On the right, the same person isn’t talking about flowers at all.
Instead, he asks a simple question.
“When did you last buy your mom flowers?”
The first one tries to sell a product; the other awakens a feeling.
We often make the same mistake in our profession.
Too many conversations begin with mutual funds, PMS, insurance, returns or asset allocation. We start by describing the solution before we have helped the client reconnect with the problem that truly matters.
A client rarely wakes up wanting to buy a balanced advantage fund or an AIF.
They wake up worrying about retirement, wondering whether their children will be financially secure, hoping to take care of ageing parents or simply asking themselves,
“Am I going to be okay?”
Those are emotional questions.
Products are simply one possible answer.
The best financial professionals understand this instinctively. They don’t begin by talking about investments. They begin by asking thoughtful questions that help clients articulate what they truly want from money. Because the moment clarity emerges, the product discussion becomes remarkably straightforward.
People don’t buy financial products. They buy confidence. They buy peace of mind. They buy the ability to sleep well at night knowing the people they love will be taken care of.
That is why the greatest competitive advantage in our profession has never been knowing all the answers. It has always been asking the questions that matter.
