I received a lot of love for my post, “Are you Chasing Excellence or the Spotlight?” If you haven’t read it yet, I would strongly encourage you to do so. It dives deep into a question that every professional—whether in finance, business, or life—should reflect on.
Author Shane Parrish wrote, “Champions obsess over fundamentals, not trophies. While others chase revenue and fancy titles, outliers focus on what they can control today: reading one more book, making one more phone call, and reviewing the email one final time. They know that excellence comes from perfecting the basics. Stop worrying about where the arrow lands. Master the art of drawing the bow.”
These words resonate deeply. They remind us that success is built on the small, everyday actions that often go unnoticed. It’s not about the shiny accolades, the big wins, or the applause. It’s about the fundamentals.
In our line of work, mastering the bow means:
- Conducting an amazing first meeting.
- Listening deeply and asking the right questions.
- Delivering a wow experience to every client, every time.
- Following up promptly and thoughtfully.
- Continuously refining your craft.
Excellence isn’t glamorous. It’s the product of discipline, practice, and focus. It’s showing up every day with the intention to be better than yesterday.
Trophies will come. Recognition will follow. But they are by-products, not the goal. The real goal is mastery—of your craft, your skills, and your mindset.
So, ask yourself: Have I mastered the art of drawing the bow? If not, what small step can I take today to start?
