I recently came across an advertisement that proudly proclaimed:
“A great financial advisor or professional knows all the answers.”
I couldn’t disagree more.
In fact, I believe the opposite is true.
The question is the answer.
Think about the best conversations you’ve ever had.
Did someone impress you by talking endlessly or did they ask one question that changed the way you thought forever?
Clients don’t come to us because they need someone to recite facts.
Google can do that…AI can increasingly do that.
What clients cannot easily find is someone who asks the question they didn’t know they needed to answer.
“What does enough look like for you?”
“What are you trying to protect?”
“What are you afraid might happen?”
“If your portfolio doubled tomorrow, would your life actually change?”
“Why is beating the benchmark more important to you than achieving your own goals?”
Did you notice something… None of these questions require the financial professional to have an immediate answer… But every one of them helps the client
discover one.
That is the difference between selling products and creating clarity.
The greatest professionals I have met are not walking encyclopedias…They are exceptional listeners…exceptional observers…exceptional questionologists (people who ask questions).
Because every meaningful financial strategy begins, not with an answer, but with curiosity.
The irony is fascinating.
The more experienced you become, the less you feel the need to impress people with what you know.
Instead, you become obsessed with understanding what they know… about themselves.
A client may forget your asset allocation.
They may forget your presentation.
They may even forget your recommendation…but they will never forget the question that changed the way they looked at their life.
Perhaps that is why I believe one of the most important shifts any financial professional can make is this:
Stop trying to become the person with all the answers… instead become the person who asks the questions that make the answers impossible to ignore.
Because in our profession, the answer isn’t the answer… the question is.
