Look at the amazing cartoon above.
The board asks about the company’s AI strategy.
The answer?
“Panic.”
It is funny because it feels uncomfortably familiar.
Every few decades, a new technology comes along that convinces businesses they must move immediately or risk being left behind. Today, that technology is AI. Suddenly everyone wants an AI chatbot, an AI meeting assistant, an AI proposal writer or an AI-powered CRM. Somewhere along the way, many firms have quietly begun confusing the adoption of AI with having an AI strategy.
A recent BCG study uncovered something fascinating. Employees with strong strategic clarity but limited access to AI tools outperformed those who had excellent AI tools but limited strategic clarity.
Pause and reflect on this.
Businesses with ordinary tools but extraordinary clarity consistently beat businesses with extraordinary tools but ordinary clarity.
That shouldn’t surprise any of us.
Technology has never rewarded confusion. It has always rewarded clarity.
A confused business doesn’t become extraordinary because it buys extraordinary software. It simply becomes a confused business with better software.
The question to focus on is not, “Which AI tool should I use?”, but the far more important question is, “What kind of wealth firm am I trying to build, and where can AI genuinely make that business better?”
The firms that will thrive over the next decade will not necessarily be the ones using the most AI tools. They will be the ones with the clearest strategy, the strongest processes, the best people and the deepest understanding of the client experience they want to create. AI will simply amplify those strengths. The real lesson is that technology magnifies strategy; it never replaces it.
The most dangerous AI strategy isn’t having too little AI. It is believing that AI itself is the strategy. Because businesses have never been transformed by technology alone. They have always been transformed by the clarity with which leaders chose to use it.
