The wise Nick Murray once said something super impactful – “You can always learn by doing. You can never do by learning.”
Read that again.
Then spend a few minutes thinking about what those twelve words really mean, because hidden inside them is a principle that has the power to transform not just your business, but your entire life.
Most financial professionals are not held back by a lack of knowledge. They are held back by the illusion that they need a little more knowledge before they are finally ready to act.
One more certification…One more sales workshop…One more study circle meeting…One more AI course…One more book…One more perfect presentation…One more year of experience.
I know of a wonderful person who has all the time in the world for study circle meets and attending certification courses but busy enough to take important decisions about the business. The question then is why do smart people fall into this trap?
They do because it feels like preparation. It feels like they are doing something and taking some action. It feels like progress but more often than not, it is simply procrastination wearing the mask of productivity.
Think back to the very first client meeting you ever conducted. No textbook could have prepared you for the emotions in that room, the unexpected questions, the awkward silences, or the confidence that slowly emerged only because you stayed in the conversation.
The real education began the moment the meeting started not the moment you finished reading about it.
The financial professional who has met five hundred clients will almost always understand people better than the one who has spent five hundred hours reading about behavioral finance. Experience has a way of teaching lessons that theory can only describe.
The same is true for writing, public speaking, hiring, delegation, networking, leadership, and building a great business.
You do not become confident and then act; you act, and confidence quietly follows.
Every exceptional business is built on thousands of imperfect conversations, countless small mistakes, honest reflection, and the willingness to keep showing up long after the excitement has faded.
Learning is important…Reflection is essential…but neither can substitute for action.
This is one uncomfortable question that you might want to reflect on, “What have you been preparing for that you should have already started doing?”
Because the most expensive course many people enroll in is the one called “Someday” and nobody ever graduates from it.
What about you?
