James Clear recently wrote, “Long-term thinking changes short-term actions. Spend a little time today doing things that will benefit you in 10 years.”
I don’t think there is a more powerful question an MFD can ask.
What am I doing today that my future self will thank me for ten years from now?
Most financial professionals spend their days responding to what is urgent. Client reviews, transactions, service requests, market volatility and endless WhatsApp messages quietly consume every available hour. The problem is not that these activities are unimportant. The problem is that they rarely build the business you dream of owning a decade later.
The firms that become truly valuable are built in the quiet moments when nobody is watching (and when you are not looking for validation or appreciation). They are built when you document a process instead of keeping it in your head, when you develop a leader instead of solving every problem yourself, when you invest in technology that genuinely improves client experience, and when you strengthen your brand long before you need it.
The fascinating thing about long-term thinking is that it completely changes today’s priorities.
You stop asking, “What will make this week easier?” and begin asking, “What will make this business stronger ten years from now?” Those are deeply different questions, and they almost always lead to different decisions.
Every enduring business you admire is simply the result of thousands of such decisions, each of them seemingly small at the time but extraordinary when viewed through the lens of a decade.
Perhaps that is the real lesson.
The future is not built ten years from now.
It is built this afternoon, in the quiet choices that nobody notices and that almost nobody applauds.
The business you own in 2036 is being designed by the decisions you make in 2026.
The choice, as always, is yours.
